Vintage Brass SS Addolorata Medal Our Lady of Sorrows
Well-loved Italian brass religious medal marked SS Addolorata. In Spanish, you might hear the same image referred to as Maria Dolorosa, or in English, Our Lady of the Sorrows. She is the patroness of Mola di Bari, Italy. A group of Italian immigrants founded a Catholic parish in Brooklyn in her name in 1948 and, continuing the tradition that began in their hometown, they hold an annual procession in her honor on Good Friday every year.
On the back of the medal: "Nomine Jesu Omne Genuflectatur." This roughly translates from the Latin as "The name of Jesus every knee bend," indicating devotion to the Holy Name.
